How to Disconnect Onstar in My Chevy Truck

OnStar is an in-vehicle security and safety system that offers 24-hour access to advisers, a connection to emergency assistance and hands-free calling. One feature of OnStar is Vehicle Diagnostics, which transmits data on key systems like the truck's engine, air bag, anti-lock brakes, electrical and OnStar systems, as well as odometer readings and remaining oil life. OnStar also uses GPS tracking. Some users find these features to be an intrusion of privacy, outweighing the beneficial security and safety features offered by the system. For this or other reasons, one may prefer to disconnect the OnStar service altogether.

  • Call the OnStar customer service center at 888-466-7827 and wait to hear a series of options.

  • Skip the first three options, which are services provided solely in the event of an emergency.

  • Choose option "6 - Cancel your subscription" by pressing the number 6 on your dial pad. This will place you on hold until a customer service representative is available to take your call.

  • Provide the customer service representative with your account information and tell him that you would like to disconnect the OnStar service in your Chevy truck.

  • Do not attempt to pull any fuses or disconnect any wiring from the OnStar module. In most Chevy trucks, the OnStar modules are located under the dash and behind the passenger side airbag. Not only is it difficult to access, but pulling the wrong fuse or cutting the wrong wire could be hazardous to the vehicle. Calling and canceling the service will be enough to disable OnStar from obtaining diagnostic data on your truck, as well as information concerning your whereabouts. There is no need to adjust the wiring system of the vehicle.
