How to Wire a Delco Delphi Monsoon Radio

Delco Delphi Monsoon radios are used in GM and Volkswagen vehicles and marketed as a premium radio. Like all other radios, they have their own set of unique wiring. Each wire is color-coded and designed to send/receive a specific signal. This is why having the right color codes is important, as incorrect wiring could damage the head unit. Ideally, the unit will be installed using a wiring harness, as this makes the job significantly easier.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire harness (optional)
  • Wire stripper
  • Electrical tape
  • Locate the wires on the back of the unit and attach a wiring harness to them. A wiring harness is designed to clip to the back of the head unit and the car's wires. It provides a bridge for the unit, eliminating the need to hardwire the unit to the car's wires. The harness is specific to the model unit and vehicle and helps keep the install clean.

  • Learn the wiring diagram for the Monsoon units.

The wiring diagram for Monsoon radio's harness in the upper right is:
    Left rear output-red
    Left rear output-blue
    Right rear output-black
    Right rear output-yellow

    Left front input-black
    Left front input-yellow
    Left rear input-orange
    Left rear input-green
    Amp 'ON'-blue&orange
    Amp sensor-black&orange

The harness on the upper left of the unit has the following color codes:
    Right front tweeter output-red
    Right front tweeter output-blue
    Left front tweet output-red
    Left front tweeter output-blue
    Right front input-red
    Right front input-white
    Right rear input-blue

    Left front mid (+) output-white
    Left front mid (-) output-brown
    Right front mid (-)output-brown
    Right front mid (+) output-white

  • Hardwire the unit. The colors of the wires will be different in each vehicle. Consult the owner's manual to learn what wires are what color. Wire the Monsoon unit to the correct wires in the vehicle. The Monsoon unit will have a number of wires coming from it; these correspond to wires in the car. For example, the Monsoon will have a "Front Left + Positive" wire and the car will also have a "Front Left + Positive" wire. These wires need to be spliced together. Match all the wires from the Monsoon unit with their car wire partners. Use a wire stripper and strip a 1/2 inch of the plastic wire coating off the wire; this will expose the wire itself. Do this for each pair. Take the pair of wires and twist them together like a twist tie. Seal the connection using electrical tape.
