The CD Player Won't Play in My Toyota Camry Radio AD6801

The AD6801 is the stock CD/cassette player that came installed in Toyota Camrys between 1995 and 1999. The CD player is occasionally reported to have problems reading CDs, and may eject the disc without playing. There are several things you can do to try to remedy this problem yourself if it happens to you before you resort to replacing the unit or having it professionally repaired.

Things You'll Need

  • CD lens cleaner disc
  • 2 audio CDs
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Adjustable-head wrench
  • Check the disc you are trying to play. If it is a CD-R, the AD6801 will not play it if there is more than 74 minutes of audio recorded onto it, even if the disc allows you to record up to 80.

  • Insert another disc and attempt to play it. If it plays, the problem is with the original disc and not the player.

  • Insert a CD lens cleaner disc with the brushes facing up and follow the instructions that came with it. Try playing a disc.

  • Turn off the car and ensure that the radio is powered down.

  • Gently remove the faceplate of the unit, using the flat-head screwdriver to loosen it from the fascia connecting it to the unit.

  • Remove the four bolts connecting the unit to the dash with the wrench.

  • Remove each of the connectors from their slots in the back of the unit. Wait for a few minutes.

  • Reinsert the connectors into their slots, then power the radio back up. This will cause the internal hardware to restart. Replace all bolts and faceplate.

  • Play a disc. If it still will not play, parts will need to be replaced. Professional repair will be necessary.
