How to Install a Car Radio in a Buick

The Buick Regal comes equipped with an AM/FM stereo deck with built-in cassette player. Buick owners who wish to upgrade their factory stereo sound system can choose from a variety of aftermarket stereo head units. After choosing the stereo that fits your car audio needs and budget, you can have a professional install the deck or do it yourself and save money.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-mm wrench
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Thin cloth
  • 7-mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Wiring harness adapter
  • GM aftermarket faceplate adapter
  • GM antenna adapter cable
  • Lift the Buick's hood and loosen the negative battery cable clamp with the wrench. Lift the cable from the battery terminal and set it aside on a non-conductive surface. Move to the inside of the vehicle.

  • Pry the trim panel that surrounds the stereo away from the dashboard with a trim panel removal tool. Wrap the blade of the tool with a thin cloth to prevent scratching the finish of the panelling.

  • Remove the two screw bolts on either side of the factory stereo with the 7-mm socket and ratchet. Slide the stereo from the dashboard and disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the back of the unit.

  • Insert the faceplate adapter into the stereo dock. Feed the stereo wiring through the faceplate adapter so that it is accessible from the front of the Buick's dashboard. Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads. Plug the antenna cable into the General Motors antenna adapter.

  • Plug the wiring harness adapter leads into the outlets on the back of the new stereo unit. Plug the General Motors antenna adapter cable lead into the FM antenna outlet on the rear panel of the aftermarket stereo. Slide the unit into the faceplate adapter until it locks into place within the Buick's stereo dock.

  • Place the trim panel around the stereo and press firmly around its perimeter to snap it back into place onto the dashboard. Return to the battery.

  • Replace the negative battery cable clamp onto the battery terminal lead post. Tighten the cable's clamp to the post with the wrench. Close the Buick's hood.
