How Do I Remove the Radio in a 2001 GMC Yukon SLT?

The 2001 GMC Yukon SLT's radio screws are hidden behind the primary dash panel. At first glance, it looks like removing the radio might be a chore, but it's actually a fairly straightforward procedure that should take less than 15 minutes in most situations. The most common reason you'd need to remove the radio is to install a new factory or aftermarket radio. No special tools are required to accomplish this task.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Move your gearshift all the way to "1" to move the handle out of the way. Set the emergency brake and shut the engine off.

  • Inspect the plastic panel surrounding the radio. Notice how the piece extends to the speedometer. You'll need to remove the entire panel to access the radio.

  • Pull the ashtray out. Grasp the panel above the ashtray with your hands. Pull firmly to unhook the bottom panel clip. Work your way over to the left. Pull the panel, one section at a time, to unhook the remaining clips.

  • Grasp the top part of the panel. Pull firmly to unhook the clips and then work your way across the entire top part of the panel. Remove the panel and set it to the side when all of the clips are unhooked.

  • Remove the four Phillips screws from the Yukon's radio. Pull the radio out. Unplug the harness and antenna from the back of it.
