How to Hook Up a Power Cable to a Car Battery

A power cord can be used for many different things but the way that you connect the cord to the battery will always be the same. Most auto parts stores sell small fuses that the power cord connects to and then the fuse connects to the battery. This fuse is the safest way to connect the cord to the battery because this will stop the battery from overheating and causing damage to the car. This fuse will cost about $10 and you won't need any major tools to connect it.

Things You'll Need

  • Power cord fuse
  • Screw driver
  • Power cord fuse connector
  • Open the hood of the car and remove the positive battery cable from the battery. Do not allow the battery cable to touch anything metal or it will complete the circuit and shock you.

  • Loosen the power connection on the fuse connector using the screw driver and insert the power cord in to the connector. Tighten the connection using the screw driver.

  • Loosen the positive connection on the fuse connector using the screw driver and insert the positive battery cable into the connector. Tighten the connector using the screw driver.

  • Loosen the battery connection on the fuse connector using the screw driver and place the connector onto the positive battery output. Tighten the connector using the screw driver. Insert the fuse to complete the circuit.
