How to Set Up an XM Ready Radio in a Car

XM Satellite Radio is available in vehicles from 24 manufacturers. There are also XM Ready aftermarket car stereos, for vehicles that are not equipped from the manufacturer with XM Satellite Radio. Several companies, including Pioneer and Kenwood, offer XM Ready car stereo head units. The basic steps to setting up XM Satellite Radio with XM Ready car stereos are similar, regardless of the head unit manufacturer.

  • Purchase the appropriate satellite-ready XM tuner for your car stereo. XM features three options directly through their website including tuners for Pioneer, Kenwood and most satellite ready stereos (see Resources).

  • Install the XM Tuner. The exact installation will vary depending on your vehicle and tuner. The basics will include installing the satellite antenna on the exterior of the vehicle, securing the tuner inside the vehicle and connecting the tuner to the XM Ready car stereo. Follow the instructions included with the tuner and car stereo to ensure proper installation.

  • Activate your XM Satellite Radio. Activation can be completed online at Xmradio.com. The 8-digit XM Radio ID, included on your tuner or as shown on the car stereo display when the tuner is on Channel 0, is required to complete activation.
