How to Replace Door Speakers on a Miata

Speakers are typically installed on the inside of the door on the driver's side and the passenger side of most types of cars, including the Miata. These speakers may need to be replaced if you are upgrading your sound system or a speaker is not functioning correctly. In order to replace the door speakers in your Miata you will need to first remove the door panel from the inside of the door.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Tweeter
  • Subwoofer
  • Remove the plastic clip pins that are used to secure the door panel with a flat-head screwdriver. Place the end of the screwdriver under the clip and turn it to release the pin.

  • Pull all of the pins out of the door panel and set them aside.

  • Pry off the cover on the door handle with the screwdriver to expose a screw. Remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Remove the screw from the door pull with the Phillips screwdriver and then pull it out.

  • Pull the carpet back beside the inside door handle to expose a screw. Remove the screw with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the door panel up so that it will separate from the window jam.

  • Pull the connector out of the tweeter to disconnect the wires from the door panel.

  • Remove the screws that are securing the tweeter to the door panel with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Locate the subwoofer in the front part of the door.

  • Pull out the connector from the subwoofer and then remove the four screws that are used to secure it with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Place a new tweeter in the door panel and tighten the screws to secure it.

  • Put a new subwoofer in the door and tighten the screws to secure it in place. You can then reconnect the connector to the speaker.

  • Reconnect the connector for the tweeter and then set the door panel back in place so that it is in the window jam.

  • Replace all of the screws and tighten them with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Replace all of the plastic clips into the hole you took them out of and then push them into place.
