How to Remove Rear Speakers in a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

The standard 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse came with four speakers. Two are in the front door panels, but the other two are in the backseat side panels. Accessing and removing these speakers is not much different than in other vehicles, except that the speaker panels are partially covered by the rear seat. At first glance, it appears there are no screws or bolts mounting the panel, but once the seat cushion is removed, they become visible.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Door trim tool
  • Unhook the negative battery cable (-) from the battery post with a pair of pliers. Pull the cable away from the post to prevent contact, which could cause shock when handling electrical components.

  • Move the front bucket seats forward using the seat adjusters. This allows greater access to the backseat area.

  • Lift the straps along the bottom-front of the backseat cushion. Pull the cushion out of the Eclipse.

  • Remove the three Phillips screws from the panel that houses the speaker. These screws are visible with the backseat cushion removed.

  • Remove the single Phillips screw from the shock cover panel (toward the rear of the seating area). With the screw removed, lift this panel away to provide complete access to the side speaker panel.

  • Insert a door trim tool underneath the side panel that houses the speaker. Push the tool handle back to pop out the panel retaining clips. Once these clips are out, carefully pull the side panel away and set it aside.

  • Remove the four Phillips screws mounting the speaker in place. Pull the speaker from its cavity and unplug the speaker's electrical connection.

  • Repeat the procedure for the other side (driver and passenger side are the same).
