How to Hook a Subwoofer Up to a Car Battery

Subwoofers add power and depth to your audio system. There are no substitutes for the way they interpret the lowest tones of music, making your stereo's sound more complete. Powered subwoofers have their own amplification. Not only will you not need to add an amplifier to boost the signal, but that you can connect the subwoofer directly to a vehicle's battery. An audio professional can connect your subwoofer, or you can do it yourself and save the cost of labor.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Amplifier wiring kit
  • Drill
  • Rubber grommets
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable. This cable connects the battery to the vehicle's frame or chassis. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the cable's clamp. Remove the clamp from the negative battery lead, and rest it away from the negative lead.

  • Connect the amplifier ring terminal from the amp wiring kit to the positive lead of the vehicle's battery.

  • Drill an opening in the firewall of the vehicle, and route the power supply cable (connected to the ring terminal) into the inner cabin of the vehicle.

  • Run the power supply cable to the location of the powered subwoofer. Lift the carpeting of the vehicle with a trim panel removal tool, and lay the cable beneath the carpet. Secure the carpeting to the floor after the cable has been routed to the subwoofer. For some vehicles, replacing the carpeting is as simple as replacing by hand the trim panels holding the carpeting to the floor. In other vehicles, Phillips-head screws hold the panelling to the floor. Consult your vehicle owner's manual for specific instructions.

  • Connect the power supply cable to the subwoofer at the input labelled "Power."

  • Place the negative battery cable's clamp back around the negative battery lead. Tighten the clamp using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
