How to Upgrade Speakers on a Ford Escape

Ford Escape owners seeking a more powerful audio system have several options. You can upgrade your stereo deck, add an amplifier and incorporate a sub-woofer. To completely realize the capacity of your vehicle's stereo system, you should upgrade the factory speakers. The doors of the Ford Escape house four 6 x 8 speakers. Choose the replacement speakers that fit your budget and meet the capacity requirements of your stereo output. You can have the speakers installed by an aftermarket technician, or you can do it yourself and save the cost of labor.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker wiring adapter
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Trim panel tool or flat screwdriver
  • Replacement speakers
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the Escape's battery. Loosen the cable's clamp using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the clamp from the negative lead post.

  • Remove the speaker covers located at the bottom forward-most corner of the door panel. Use a trim panel tool or flat screwdriver to pry the cover from the door panel.

  • Remove the factory speakers. Take out the four screws securing the speakers, using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the speaker from the door panel and disconnect the wire connected to the speaker. Squeeze either side of the plastic speaker wire binding to release the connection.

  • Connect the speaker binding to a speaker wiring adapter. Connect the speaker wiring adapter to the new 6 X 8 speaker. Place the speaker into the door panel and replace the four screws, with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Replace the speaker cover by hand, using a medium amount of force. The cover will snap into place.

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for each door.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to the Ford Escape battery. Place the cable's clamp around the negative battery lead post. Tighten the clamp, with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The clamp should be tightened so that it cannot be moved around the lead by hand.
