How to Use a Ford Radio to Play an iPod

Ford owners who want to connect an iPod to their car audio system can have a simple task ahead or a more arduous one, depending on their model. Ford vehicles from 2008 to 2010 come with an outlet for an iPod connection just below the dash trim panel. Simply remove the panel by hand, plug in the adapter and route the cable through to the glove compartment. For owners of older models, you need to remove the stereo to make the connection. Either way, you can have a technician perform the installation, or do it yourself for a fraction of the cost.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Ford DIN removal tools
  • iPod car adapter
  • Wiring harness adapter
  • Under the hood, remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the cable's clamp and remove it from the negative lead post.

  • Insert the Ford DIN removal tools into the vertically aligned holes on either side of the stereo face. Pull outward on the tools and pull the stereo from the dash.

  • Disconnect the wire groups from the rear of the stereo. Pull from the plastic grouping binders, not the wires themselves.

  • Connect the wire groups to a wiring harness adapter. Connect the wiring harness to the stereo. Connect the iPod adapter to the wire harness adapter lead marked "AUX."

  • Route the iPod adapter cable to the glove compartment from the stereo dock location.

  • Replace the stereo into its dock by hand. The stereo will "snap" into place when fully seated.

  • Replace the negative battery cable clamp around the battery's negative lead post. Tighten the cable's clamp with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Connect the iPod to the adapter lead in the glove compartment. Select AUX on the Ford stereo to control the iPod through the stereo. You can also operate the iPod on the device itself.
