How to Replace a Ford Explorer Speaker

In a large vehicle like the Ford Explorer, many people like to have high-quality speakers to go with it. If your speakers are getting old and worn out, or you don't like the quality of the Explorer's stock speakers, you can always upgrade and replace them. Once you have a new set of speakers from CarToys or another electronics shop, it's just a matter of getting inside the interior of the Explorer's doors to remove and replace the speakers one by one.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-bladed tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Car speaker
  • Unplug the negative battery cable from the Explorer's battery under the hood.

  • Detach the door handle bezel form the door's inner trim panel, carefully prying it off with a large flat-bladed screwdriver or similar tool. Detach the control plate on the armrest by prying it up at the front end, and disconnect its electrical connectors.

  • Unscrew all mounting screws attaching the trim panel to the door; they are located at the lower end of the panel and in the opening that the switch panel was in. Lift the panel off its retaining clips, grabbing it at the switch panel opening, to remove it, then peel back the water shield.

  • Remove the mounting screws on the speaker with a screwdriver. Pull the speaker out of the door and unplug its electrical connector to remove the speaker from the door and vehicle.

  • Position the new speaker in place on the door and mount it to the door. Use the screws that come with the speaker, or make sure the old screws will work with the new speaker (using new screws is always a better option).

  • Replace everything on the door in reverse order that it was removed. Put the water shield back in place, using fresh glue if it won't stick easily, reconnect and mount the door panel and reconnect the switch panel and handle bezel. Reconnect the battery cable once the speakers have been replaced on each door.
