How to Remove a Ford Expedition Factory Stereo

The Ford Expedition's factory stereo system consists of the main radio/stereo assembly at the dashboard and the speakers within the doors. Each of these parts are removed separately to remove the entire system. The radio is held in place with special clips for anti-theft measures requires special tools for removal. You need to get inside the doors by removing the inner trim panels to remove the speakers.

Things You'll Need

  • Stereo removal tools
  • Flat bladed tool
  • Screwdriver
  • Unplug the cable for the battery's negative terminal.

  • Detach the trim bezel surrounding the stereo. Grasp the bezel with both hands and pull it outward to disengage it from its clips.

  • Release the theft prevention clips holding the stereo unit in place. An auto parts store has the tools needed to do this, but you can also use two coat hanger wires bent into "U" shapes. Insert the tools all the way into the holes at each end of the stereo until you feel the clips release.

  • Pull the radio assembly out with the tools, gripping them simultaneously. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the assembly and remove it completely.

  • Prepare the door's inner trim panel for removal. Pry out the control plate in the armrest with a flat tool and unplug the electrical connectors. Remove the retaining screws behind the control plate, the courtesy lamp housing and the side mirror trim cover. Remove the handle by removing the retaining nut behind the nearby small trim piece.

  • Remove the clip on the panel's front edge, then pull off the panel, disconnect all electrical connectors and peel back the watershield.

  • Disconnect the mounting screws on the speakers, pull them out of the door and disconnect their electrical connectors.
