How to Install a Stereo in a Dodge Caravan

The popular Dodge Caravan is one of the minivan models that started the soccer mom generation. With a roomy interior and comfortable design, the Dodge Caravan remains a good choice for families on the go. Upgrading the sound system for improved features and better sound than the original stereo provided is an easy project. Having the right parts and a few tips will help you get this job done in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdrivers
  • Chrysler radio mounting kit
  • Wiring harness adaptor
  • Open the hood and remove the negative cable from the battery terminal. Secure the cable so that it can't touch any metal parts.

  • Remove the trim that surrounds the stereo on the Dodge Caravan dash by pulling gently at one of the top corners. Apply gentle pressure to unclip the plastic pieces that secure it in place.

  • Locate the screws on each side of the stereo and remove them. Pull out the head unit and disconnect the wires from behind the stereo.

  • Slide the new stereo into the Chrysler radio mounting kit. Connect the wiring harness adaptor to the original harness and then to the back of the head unit. Attach the antenna to the back of the radio and slide the entire assembly into the dash.

  • Connect the negative cable onto the battery terminal and turn the radio on. Verify all of the speakers and controls are working properly. Screw the bolts into the sides of the stereo case and snap the trim into place.
