Unity Spotlight Installation Instructions

A spotlight provides auxiliary lighting for emergency and law enforcement vehicles, as well as many privately owned vehicles. A spotlight may light up a dark driveway or walkway where the normal headlights are not as effective. You usually mount Unity spotlights on the windshield pillar of most vehicles. The spotlight has a handle that protrudes within the passenger compartment, allowing the operator to turn on and adjust the light at the angle needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Center punch
  • Hammer
  • 1/8-inch drill bit
  • Power drill
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ½-inch drill bit
  • Flashlight
  • 5/16-inch drill bit
  • Place the mounting template -- which should be included with the spotlight -- over the exterior of the windshield pillar in the desired location. Place the point of a center punch in the center of one of the mounting holes in the template. Strike the punch with a hammer to make an indentation on the pillar. Repeat for the remaining mounting holes. Remove the template.

  • Insert a 1/8-inch drill bit into a power drill and drill holes through the sheet metal of the windshield pillar from the outside on the indentations. Place the spotlight mounting bracket gasket and the bracket on the windshield post. Line up the mounting holes with the drilled holes. Drive self-tapping screws into the mounting holes and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Insert the drill bushing -- included with the spotlight -- into the spotlight mounting bracket and tighten the retaining screw. Insert a ½-inch drill bit into the power drill. Use the drill bushing as a guide to keep the drill in proper alignment and drill a hole through the outer sheet metal of the windshield pillar.

  • Remove the drill and check the hole with a flashlight for any wires. Continue drilling through the hole to the inside of the vehicle if no wires are in the way of the drill bit. Push the wires aside with needle-nose pliers if they are in the drill's path. Loosen the retaining screw and remove the drill bushing.

  • Open the vehicle door closest to the spotlight mounting bracket. Loosen the retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the handle from the spotlight.

  • Insert the shaft of the spotlight through the hole in the mounting bracket. Ensure the spotlight housing is flush with the mounting bracket. Hold the spotlight with one hand while pushing the handle back on the spotlight shaft inside the vehicle. Rotate the handle until it locks into place and tighten the retaining screw.

  • Insert a 5/16-inch drill bit into the power drill. Drill a hole in the car body near the spotlight mounting bracket. Push the rubber wiring grommet into the hole until it is fully seated. Route the spotlight wiring through the hole to the interior of the vehicle. Slip the cigarette lighter adaptor onto the end of the spotlight wire and tighten the retaining screw. Plug the adaptor into the vehicle's cigarette lighter. Turn on the spotlight power switch to test its operation.
