How to Modify Inline 6 Cylinder Ford Engines

Ford's inline six-cylinder engines have gained a reputation for reliability and performance as a result of their being the standard engine for the F-150 truck for decades. While the inline six is no longer the standard F-150 engine, it remains a popular choice for enthusiasts looking to purchase used F-150 models. Despite the inline six no longer being in production, there are number of bolt-on upgrades available for inline six-cylinder engine-powered Fords that not only boost horsepower output, but improve overall performance.

Things You'll Need

  • Performance exhaust system
  • Aftermarket air intake system
  • Performance chip
  • Modify the inline six's electronic control unit by attaching an aftermarket performance chip. Remove the electronic control unit module from its location behind the driver's side kick panel. Next, carefully remove the cover from the end of the module and connect the performance chip. Reinstall the electronic control unit module back into its factory location.

  • Alter the inline six's air intake by installing an aftermarket air filter. Open the vehicle's hood and locate the factory air box. Remove the factory air filter and replace it with the more free-flowing aftermarket model. Close the factory air box and the hood.

  • Connect a free-flowing and wide-diameter aftermarket exhaust system to the inline six-cylinder engine. The new exhaust system increases the flow of exhaust gases away from the engine and lowers the system's overall back pressure. Both changes result in increased horsepower output as well as enhanced overall performance. As welding is recommended for installation, it is best to have a professional install the new exhaust system.
