How to Install Suspension Lift Blocks

Lift blocks can raise or level a vehicle with a leaf spring rear suspension with less cost than a new suspension system. The lift blocks are made of a composite material that resists damage from debris, and does not become brittle in extreme temperatures or when subjected to moisture. Proper installation of the lift blocks is essential to the safety of your vehicle. Improper installation can lead to a misalignment of the vehicle axle or cause the axle to shift and destroy the suspension system.

Things You'll Need

  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack
  • Two jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Lift block installation kit
  • Set the parking brake of the vehicle and place one wheel chock in front of each of the vehicle's front tires.

  • Place a floor jack at a manufacturer-recommended rear lifting point. Raise the jack to a height that allows you to set a jack stand under the frame. Move to the other side of the vehicle and repeat the process to set a second jack stand.

  • Lower the jack. Move the jack to the differential housing of the vehicle's rear end. Raise the jack to compress the suspension system.

  • Remove the four hex nuts located on the bottom of the U-bolts holding the passenger side leaf spring to the rear-end housing. Remove the two U-bolts from the mounting bracket. Lower the floor jack until you have 3 to 4 inches of space between the leaf spring and the rear-end housing.

  • Slide a lift block in the space left by lowering the floor jack. Raise the jack to close the gap between the rear housing, lift block and leaf spring. Slide new U-bolts -- supplied with the lift blocks -- over the leaf spring, lift block and through the leaf spring mounting bracket, which is located on the rear-end housing.

  • Repeat the process to install the lift block on the driver's side of the vehicle. Remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground when complete.
