Installation for Off-Road Lights on a Roof Light Bar

Installing off-road lights onto the roof light bar of your vehicle is one of the best ways to improve the driver's visibility. For this purpose, you have the opportunity to choose from a great variety of products, from mid- to long-range lights. Furthermore, the off-road light bars come in different sizes, compatible with any type of vehicle. The installation process should take no longer than 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Drill bit
  • Wire strippers
  • Stainless steel bolts
  • Tape or solder
  • Find the section of the roof bar that you'd like the lights to go. Some roof bars have pre-drilled holes to mount the lights, while others require that you drill the holes yourself.

  • Drill a small hole with your drill into your dash where you would like the switch to go, then unscrew the switch. Push the back end of the top of the switch through the hole until it rests on the dash. Screw the back of the switch onto the part that you put into the hole to secure it. You can hand tighten the switch; you don't want it too tight.

  • Run the positive and negative wires from the lights into the car and attach them to the back of your switch in the corresponding areas.

  • Strip a small piece of wire with your wire strippers, and attach it to the power and ground wires under your steering column. The other end should attach to the wires for the overhead lights.

  • Seal the connection on the fused wires using electrical tape or solder.

  • Secure the grounds of the light bar and tighten it to the frame of your vehicle using stainless steel bolts. Make sure the frame's metal is also clear and provides a good connection.

  • Turn on the new lights to test them while the vehicle faces a large building. Adjust the direction manually and make sure you have properly tightened the lights down to the bar.
