How to Install Ladder Racks

Installing ladder racks onto your truck is not difficult to do. Most of these racks come in easy-to-install kits and even those that don't are sold with all the necessary parts that you'll need to install them. Ladder racks are not only good for loading ladders onto your truck, but also for carrying all sorts of tools and equipment. You'll need to get some friends to help you with the installation, not because the rack is heavy but because you won't want to scratch up your truck during installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Top racks (x4)
  • Allen wrench
  • Wrench
  • Front rail
  • Back rail
  • Pin (x2)
  • Back leg (x2)
  • Middle cross bar
  • Cross bar clamp (x2)
  • Support leg (x2)
  • Support leg clamps (x4)
  • Brackets (x2)
  • Rack brackets (x2)
  • Drill
  • Slip the two sides of the top racks into one another and bolt them into place using an Allen wrench and standard wrench to hold the nut in place. Repeat this step with the top racks for the opposite side of the truck.

  • Slip in the back and front rails onto the top racks and then bolt the front rail in place with the Allen wrench and pin the back wrench in place with the pins provided at the time of purchase. The back rail is held in place with pins so that it is easy to remove in the case that you need more room.

  • Slip the back legs into the back of the top rails and bolt those into place.

  • Place the middle cross bar at the center of the rack and bolt it into place using the clamps provided at the time of purchase. Do not tighten the clamps all the way so that you can adjust the bar once the rack is on your truck.

  • Slip the support arms onto the top racks and hold them in place using the clamps provided at the time of purchase. Do not tighten the clamps for these either so that you can easily adjust their position once the rack is on the truck.

  • Install the support brackets onto the back legs and bolt them into place but do not tighten the bolts so that you can easily adjust the brackets once the rack is on the truck.

  • Bolt the rack brackets onto the back of the bed of your truck by drilling a hole from the top of the bracket into the side rail of the bed of your truck and then screwing them into place tightly. Do not install the brackets so far back that the gate won't close on your bed.

  • Lift the rack up onto the truck. Use three friends, one on each leg of the rack to avoid scratching your truck and place the rack onto the rack brackets. Slip the support legs into the holes at the front of the bed, close to the cab.

  • Bolt the brackets on the back legs onto the rack brackets and then tighten all the screws on the brackets, the middle cross bar and the support legs.
