How to Time a Subaru Engine

The basic timing on a Subaru engine is controlled by the proper installation of the timing belt. The highly advanced engine uses variable valve timing and computer controlled ignition to continuously monitor the ignition timing based on the factory programming of the electronic control unit. Changes are possible with the right equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Interface to Electronic Control Unit with programmable controls
  • General automotive repair tools and supplies
  • Inspect the timing belt and pulleys to ensure they are properly tensioned and in good repair. Replace any belt that has been in service for 60,000 miles or more.

  • Connect the computer interface, available from one of the sources in the reference section, to the vehicle computer port under the dash. Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.Select the profile you want from those available in the menu system and apply the changes to your car's computer. Disconnect the interface.

  • Test drive the vehicle to make sure you get the changes you expected.
