How to Install a Trailer Hitch on My Town & Country Van

If your Town and Country van did not come with a trailer hitch from the factory, aftermarket hitches can be purchased at your local auto parts store. These hitches are carefully designed so that no drilling or welding is required. They mount to existing holes in the frame of the vehicle. Hitches are offered in different weight classes, so you should determine the amount of weight you will be pulling before you select the hitch you want to purchase.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydraulic jack
  • Wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Socket set
  • Hitch kit
  • Place a jack under the rear axle of the vehicle. Lift the vehicle enough to crawl under and reach the van's frame.

  • Lay on the ground and crawl under the vehicle. Locate the two rear-most bolts in the frame rails of the vehicle. Each frame rail has two bolts. Remove them using a wrench.

  • Place the washers that came with the hitch kit onto the bolts that were removed in Step 2.

  • Lift the trailer hitch into position. It mounts on the bottom of the frame rails.

  • Align the holes and insert the bolts through the hitch and thread them into the frame rails.

  • Tighten the bolts to 75 ft.-lbs. using a torque wrench and a socket.

  • Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the hydraulic jack.
