How to Cut a Hole in Your Hood for a Scoop

Cutting a hole in the hood for a hood scoop should only be done if you do not think you are going to change your mind about the hood scoop. It is a better choice to purchase a fiberglass hood, so that you have the original hood for the vehicle should you ever decide to sell it in its original condition. Also, fiberglass is easier to cut and easier to attach the hood scoop.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Straight edge
  • Chalk or other marking implement
  • Drill
  • Saw with metal-cutting blade (for metal hoods)
  • Saw with metal- or wood-cutting blade (for fiberglass hoods)
  • Find the center of the hood by measuring from the passenger side of the hood to the driver's side. Divide the number in half. Mark this measurement with a dot near the top of the hood, in the middle and near the front of the hood. Measure from the cowl to the front of the hood. Divide this measurement in half. Mark the hood from left to right in three places: close to the left fender, in the middle and close to the right fender of the hood.

  • Draw a line through the dots on the hood, using the straight edge. The lines will intersect in the center of the hood.

  • Measure the hole in the bottom of the hood scoop from top to bottom and from side to side, and subtract 1 inch from each measurement. Divide each number in half. Using the top-to-bottom number, measure from the center intersecting lines toward the cowl and place a mark. Measure from the center intersecting lines toward the front of the hood and place a mark. Using the side-to-side number, measure from the center intersecting lines to the left and right and make a mark.

  • Measure from the rear and front marks you just made, using the side-to-side number, out to the sides, and make a mark, so that the sides now have three marks. Using the front-to-back number, measure from the side marks you measured and made. You should have three marks in the other directions. Using the straight edge, connect the dots to draw a rectangle or square.

  • Drill a hole using the drill at one of the corners of the square or rectangle. This is going to be your starting point, so drill the hole big enough---inside the lines---for the saw to fit through. Saw along the lines, starting in the hole you created with the drill.
