Single Vs. Dual Exhaust for V6 Mustang

Mustangs are one of the most chimeric of performance cars. With an engine and drive train for every need, it isn't difficult to find performance parts for any and all. The only question is: which one suits your needs the best?

History

  • All V6 Mustangs ever produced came with a single-pipe exhaust. Newer cars have pipes that split into two at some point, but are still defined as being "single" exhaust.

Dual Definition

  • A true dual-exhaust system maintains complete separation of the opposing banks' exhaust streams from engine to tailpipe. Modern dual exhausts are often joined by a balance tube or "X-pipe," but are still considered duals.

Dual Advantages

  • A dual-exhaust system allows your engine to eliminate exhaust gases faster, and to create more top-end horsepower.

Single Advantage

  • A single-exhaust system will often allow small-displacement engines to produce more torque via increased flow velocity, but a properly designed dual system will do the job just as well.

Fitment

  • Since all Mustangs come with a V8 option, fitting a dual-exhaust system is relatively easy. It simply involves replacing the stock Y-pipe with an adapter that allows installation of any Mustang GT exhaust system.
