How to Make Your Own Mesh Car Grill

Mesh car grills can be found on show cars, race cars or daily driven cars. They add a custom look to your car and makes the front-end stand out. Mesh can also be painted before being installed to your car, giving your car an even more custom look. A mesh grill also protects the engine from road debris or birds while driving down the road.

Things You'll Need

  • Mesh (can be bought in rolls or sheets)
  • Drill
  • Wire cutters
  • Metal twist ties
  • Measuring tape
  • Spray paint (optional)
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Measure the area of the car where the mesh grill is being installed. Allow two extra inches all the way around your measurement.

  • Lay the mesh flat and measure and mark the area to be cut out. Is the mesh was bought in a roll, you may need to sit heavy objects on each side to keep the mesh from rolling up while you cut.

  • Cut the design out of the mesh using the wire cutters. Remember to keep an extra two inches around the design.

  • Remove the bumper cover from your car if the mesh will be installed on it. You will need to reach the back side of the bumper cover.

  • Remove any material that is on the bumper cover so the mesh can be installed. The material in place can be removed be using a screwdriver to pop out the plastic rivets, or by using a wrench on the small bolts.

  • Lay the mesh design you cut out on the back side of the bumper cover where the old material was removed. If possible, use the remaining holes to attach the mesh grill. If there are not enough holes or if they are in the wrong places, drill new holes.

  • Use metal wire to attach the mesh grill. Run the wire through the hole in the bumper cover and threw the holes in the mesh. Pull the mesh snugly against the bumper cover and twist the metal wire tightly.

  • Install the bumper cover back on the car and you are done.
