How to Install a Roll-up Tonneau Cover

Tonneau covers, also called bed covers, keep water and elements out of the truck bed. Roll-up tonneau covers are made of soft material that can be rolled up to access the entire truck bed when needed and unrolled to protect the entire bed. Each tonneau cover must be suited to the make and model of the truck. Installing roll-up tonneau covers can be completed in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrenches
  • Tape measure
  • Install the railings to the tonneau cover to each side of the truck bed. Verify the railings are placed on the correct side of the bed. The railings should have markings detailing driver or passenger side. Use the clamps provided with the cover to hold the railings in place.

  • Check the level on the installed railing lip. If the lip is too high or too low, adjust the clamps so the railings lip sits level.

  • Install the cover at the cab of the pickup. The tonneau cover will be secured to the railings using bolts. Use a tape measure to make sure that the cover is centered and install the bolts to hold the cover in place.

  • Unroll the cover over the railings. The cover should expand the length of the truck bed and either latch or Velcro into place at the end of the cover, depending on the brand of cover. If the cover is too long or too short, adjust the tensioning of the cover using bolts attached to the cover or railings.
