How to Wire an S10 Trailer

The Chevrolet S-10 is a light pickup that can pull a small trailer, allowing the owner to tow a small boat, moving trailer, or other item. This makes the truck very convenient and versatile. The problem is that you need to connect the lights on the backside of the trailer to the brake lights on the S-10. To do that, you just need a trailer wiring harness built for an S-10, and about 5 minutes of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle-specific trailer wiring harness
  • Self tapping screws
  • Drill
  • Zip ties
  • Lay on your back and look underneath the rear of the S-10. Locate the black plug on the inside of the driver's side framerail, next to the rear leaf spring shackle. Separate the plug with your hands.

  • Insert one side of the vehicle specific trailer wiring harness into one side of the plug, and the other side of the vehicle specific trailer wiring harness into the other side of the plug with your hands, forming a t-shaped connection with the remainder of the trailer wiring harness leading out.

  • Locate the white wire in the vehicle-specifici trailer wiring harness with the ring terminal on the end. Insert a self-tapping screw into the center of the ring terminal, then use the drill to install the self-tapping screw into the frame.

  • Run the remainder of the vehicle-specific trailer wiring harness along the inside of the bumper and out of the hole in the middle of the bumper by the license plate. Use the zip ties to secure the wiring to the frame and bumper.
