How to Install an E2 Trailer Hitch

The Fastway e2 hitch from Progress Manufacturing is a patented tow hitch system which features an integrated sway controller. The device allows for a single-process hook-up that is as simple and easy as using a conventional tow package, while providing all the benefits of a sway controller without the added connections, disconnections and storage issues. The e2 does this by incorporating sprung steel brackets into its design that create steel-on-steel friction to dampen trailer side-to-side motion. It significantly improves weight balance between tow vehicle and trailer axles, reducing the tendency of steering axles to lift and skip.

Things You'll Need

  • e2 trailer hitch kit
  • Wheel chocks
  • Tape measure
  • Socket set
  • Load the trailer and tow vehicle with typical weights and weight distributions. Have full propane tanks and empty holding tanks in the trailer if that is how you normally travel, and replicate the weight of the usual number of passengers in the tow vehicle. Disable the tow vehicle's automatic leveling function.

  • Locate the trailer and tow vehicle on flat, level ground. Chock the trailer wheels then uncouple the tow vehicle.

  • Adjust the stance of the trailer with the tongue jack until it is parallel with the ground, then use a tape to measure the space between the hitch receiver and the ground. Install the tow ball on the tow vehicle and follow the manufacturer's instructions to space it so that it is the same distance from the ground as the hitch receiver. Once the correct spacing is achieved, insert the shank bolt and use a socket to tighten its nylock nut.

  • Reverse the tow vehicle up to the trailer and lower the receiver onto the ball; retract the jack until it is approximately one inch off the ground. On the trailer tongue mark a point 27-inches back from the coupler assembly, then attach the L-bracket to the nearest combinations of bolt-holes to the mark. Attach the sway bracket assembly to the L-bracket as instructed in the manufacturer's literature.

  • Extend the tongue jack until there is sufficient space beneath the tongue/tow ball assembly to swing the spring arms into place. Following the manufacturer's detailed instructions to install the spring arms above the L-brackets; they will clip positively into their proper locations. Use the L-shaped pins to lock them in position.
