How to Install a Tool Box on a Tacoma

A popular modification to do to a Toyota Tacoma is to install a tool box in the bed. This provides utility by giving you a place to store your tools and is particularly handy for contractors and construction workers. Installing a tool box in your Tacoma can be done in around an hour and does not require any complicated tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Tool box
  • Tool box installation kit
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • Phillips-head drill bit
  • Metal drill bits
  • Permanent marker
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Measure the top of the tool box to determine the depth that it will sit in the bed. Transfer that measurement to the top of the bed rail towards the cab, and apply the mounting tape from the toolbox mounting kit to the top of the bed rails using your hands.

  • Set the tool box on top of the bed rails. Open the tool box and slide the J-bolts provided in the kit into the box, positioned so that the "J" portion hooks onto the underside of the bed rails. Loosely tighten the j-bolts by hand. Measure the toolbox with the tape measure and make sure it's square in the bed and fits to your liking.

  • Put the L-shaped mounting leg from the kit onto the bed floor so that the long end is touching the side of the toolbox and the bottom is on the bed floor. Mark the holes in the mounting leg onto the toolbox and the bed floor with the permanent marker. Do this on both sides of the truck box and bed floor.

  • Lift the truck box out of the bed. Drill the marks on the toolbox and the bed using the drill and metal drill bits. Loosely bolt the mounting legs onto the toolbox and lift it back in place onto the bed. Loosely bolt the mounting legs onto the bed floor by hand.

  • Reinstall the J-bolts on the toolbox using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then tighten all of the mounting hardware on the legs and the J-hooks with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
