How to Install Roof Racks on a Honda Cr-V

Attaching roof racks to the top of your Honda CR-V will make life much easier for a family going on a long trip, or for someone who needs to move items from one place to the other on a regular basis. A roof rack gives you the option to securely tie down luggage or any other item without having to stuff it into the back seat or trunk.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Honda CR-V roof rack
  • Small towel
  • T-25 Torx wrench
  • Locate the four placeholder covers on the bars running parallel from front to back on the top of your Honda CR-V. Two placeholder covers will be located on each bar.

  • Cover the end of a flathead screwdriver with a towel to avoid damaging the top of your Honda CR-V.

  • Wedge the flathead screwdriver beneath one of the placeholder covers and slowly pry the cover up. Three connectors are spread out evenly in the placeholder. Remove the placeholder cover and set it to the side. Repeat this step for the other three placeholder covers.

  • Store the placeholder covers in the glove box or any other safe place in case you decide to remove your roof rack.

  • Place the rack mount labeled "Front" in the front placeholder slots and align it with the bolt holes.

  • Locate the washers and the bolts that came with your roof rack.

  • Slide one of the washers onto one of the bolts. Repeat this process five more times.

  • Screw three of the bolts into the bolt holes on each side of the front roof rack using the 5 mm Hex wrench that came with your roof rack. Tighten the screws so that they are snug. Use a T-25 Torx wrench to tighten the bolts. Set the torque on your wrench to 7 lbs. Be careful not to over tighten the bolts.

  • Snap the appropriate end cover onto the end of each side of the rack. You may have to gently push down on the cover to make sure it is securely in place.

  • Place the rack mount labeled "Rear" in the rear placeholder slots and align it with the bolt holes.

  • Repeat Steps 6 through 9 for the rear rack.

  • Pull carefully on the front and rear roof racks to make sure that they are locked securely into position on top of your Honda CR-V. If you discover that the roof racks are loose, consider setting your T-25 Torx wrench to 8 lbs. and tightening all of the bolts a little bit more.
