How to Safely Remove a Ball Hitch

A ball hitch on a truck or car is mounted to a receiver hitch that's mounted to the back of the vehicle. This is because there are ball hitches of various sizes for different types of trailers, and this allows you to be flexible. If you ever need to pull a trailer that you don't have the correct size ball for, you just have to switch it out. Doing so can be done in under five minutes with just a few tools, but first, you have to remove the ball hitch.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench set
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface. Locate the ball hitch on the rear of the vehicle, connected to the vehicle receiver. Locate the nut at the bottom of the ball hitch.

  • Remove the nut on the bottom of the ball hitch using an open-end wrench. Pull the ball off the hitch with your hands.

  • Pull out the locking pin securing the hitch to the receiver, using your hands. Pull the hitch out of the receiver.
