How to Make a Snorkel for a Jeep

Easily taken from highway to off-road adventure, a Jeep may take you to places where you need to make a snorkel to keep your vehicle from stalling. A snorkel protects the Jeep's engine from pulling water into the intake while traversing through deep water. It can eliminate the risk of stalling when you need your vehicle the most. You can make a snorkel for a Jeep easily if you are motivated to engage in extreme off-road driving conditions.

Things You'll Need

  • Jeep (Wrangler)
  • Air filter (cone type, high-flow)
  • Paint can
  • ABS piping (2-1/2 inch X 12 feet)
  • Elbows (rubber, 45 and 90 degree)
  • Rubber flashing
  • Hose clamps
  • Glue (ABS pipe weld)
  • Silicon gel
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wrenches
  • Drill
  • Jigsaw
  • Open the hood of a Jeep Wrangler. Look on the driver's side of the engine and you will see the factory air box assembly that will be replaced with a new Jeep snorkel. Remove the factory assembly until the only thing left is the neck that leads into the intake.

  • Cut a straight piece of ABS pipe 6 inches long. Cut 4-inch lengths of rubber elbow from each end of one elbow. Attach one end of the 6-inch long ABS pipe to the Jeep intake neck using the ABS pipe held in place with the rubber elbow pieces and two hose clamps.

  • Weld a 90-degree elbow to the 6-inch piece of vertical ABS pipe using ABS pipe glue. Weld a 4-inch piece of ABS pipe in to open end of the 90-degree elbow with ABS pipe glue. This completed assembly will receive the air filter container and should be solidly built to withstand the weight when completed.

  • Cut an opening in the lid of a can of paint the size of the tube coming out from the base of the new air filter. The paint lid will be where the paint can connects to the rest of the assembly, creating a watertight housing for the snorkel. Use two hose clamps to secure the filter to the intake inlet tube--one for tightening the filter to the pipe and one to secure the paint can lid securely against the underside of the air filter.

  • Bolt three latch clamps to the side of the paint can to hold the paint can lid securely to the base of the can. Use silicon gel to coat the bolts as they pass through the sides of the can to make sure it is watertight. Cut a hole in the paint can 3 inches up from the base. Cut it big enough to insert one end of an 18-inch piece of ABS pipe into it and secure it in place with ABS glue. Make the seam watertight with silicon applied around the joint after the glue has set.

  • Point the open end of the ABS pipe that sticks out from the airtight air filter housing toward the outside wall of the engine compartment in front of the driver. Cut a hole in the body where the pipe would naturally exit if it was extended. Seat a circular rubber flashing inside the hole and glue it in place.

  • Cut a piece of ABS pipe long enough to extend 4 inches out from the side of the Jeep Wrangler body where the hole was cut. Connect the rubber elbows with hose clamps together to extend the end of the snorkel as high as you need. Latch the paint can to the filter using the latches and check that all screws and fasteners are tight. You should be ready to drive in deep water.

Always check the actual depth of the water you intend to drive through before you plunge in, of course, to avoid drowning your Jeep and possibly yourself.
