How to Remove a Spoiler From a Corolla

It used to be that adding a custom wing or spoiler to your car was the coolest thing ever, with the rule being that the bigger the wing, the cooler it was. As time goes on, though, trends change and those big spoilers drop out of fashion, leaving you with a problem: take the wing off or suffer through being teased by your friends. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1999 Toyota Corolla, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Assistant
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Wire cutters
  • Hole plugs in varying sizes
  • Pop the trunk and locate the wiring harness that runs from the trunk to the spoiler for a third brake light. Unplug this harness using your hands, or if it's connected with aftermarket wiring, cut the wires using the wire cutters.

  • Locate the screw holes that secure the spoiler to the trunk. These are typically out toward the edges of the trunk, and generally come in pairs for each side. Unbolt one bolt from each side of the spoiler using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, leaving two bolts to hold it in place.

  • Lower the deck lid so you can still get a ratchet underneath it, but so the spoiler is close to parallel with the ground. Have your assistant hold the spoiler while you unbolt it using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Once it's unbolted, have your assistant gently lift the spoiler off of the trunk.

  • Shut the trunk and place the hole plugs on top of the holes left by the spoiler so you won't have leaks in the trunk. Clip into place. Hole plugs can be found at any local hardware store.
