What Is Dual Exhaust?

Dual exhaust is an exhaust setup where there are two exhaust pipes, sometimes with two mufflers, other times with a single combined muffler. Dual exhausts are offered on many car models and are a popular aftermarket option.

Features

  • A dual exhaust, as opposed to a single exhaust, has two pipes at the rear or side of the car. A true dual exhaust type has two separate mufflers, and the exhaust pipes do not connect. Some dual exhausts have the exhaust pipes connecting before the muffler(s) in order to mix the gases to ensure even thermal load. A split dual exhaust system has a single muffler under the car with two exhaust pipes coming out of it.

Benefits

  • The benefits of a dual exhaust over a single are that it allows for greater horsepower since the engine does not have to push as hard to get the exhaust out of the engine. This, in turn, allows the engine to run cooler since the hot exhaust is expelled faster and has less time to heat up other components in the engine bay.

Popular Types

  • Popular cars with dual exhausts include the Mustang GT, Camaro SS, Lexus IS F and many Porsche models. Popular aftermarket models are manufactured by Flowmaster, Borla and Remus. Generally, exhaust systems are designed for specific vehicles; however, there are universal aftermarket kits, yet they require a machine shop to ensure proper fit.
