How to Program the Garage Door Opener on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Since the early 2000s, Jeep Grand Cherokees have come equipped with some of the manufacturer's top technologies. These capabilities include an on-board radio transmitter that can control a variety of tools, including a garage-door opener. You can program the Jeep's transmitter to act as a garage-door opener in just minutes from your home. Be sure you are in or just outside of your garage and that your garage-door motor is working.

  • Turn off the engine of the car and press and hold buttons 1 and 3 on the Jeep's transmitter for 20 seconds to erase previous codes. Release them when the display reads "Channels Cleared."

  • Hold your garage-door remote 1 to 3 inches from the Jeep transmitter.

  • Press and hold the open button on your handheld remote and simultaneously press the button you wish to program on the Jeep's transmitter. For example, if you want button 2 to be the one you use to open your garage door, press button 2 while pressing the open button the remote.

  • Release the button once you hear a beep and the display reads "Trained."

  • Press the "smart" button on your garage door motor. This button is usually located on the back or side of the motor near the antenna wire and light lens.

  • Return to your vehicle and press and hold the programmed button in your Jeep for 2 seconds. Release and press and hold the button for another 2 seconds to complete the programming sequence. You will now be able to use the vehicle's transmitter to open your garage door.
