How to Remove Miata Shift Knobs

Aftermarket shift knobs are a common interior accessory. To install an aftermarket replacement for a factory-replacement gearshift knob, you'll need to remove the old one. The Mazda Miata (also known as the MX-5 Miata) uses a simple gearshift knob design. No clips, hooks or screws hold the shift knob in place. You can remove it without any tools. The procedure is the same on all Miata vehicles (1990 to 2010).

  • Shift your manual gearshift to neutral. Set the parking brake lever and turn the engine off. If your Miata has an automatic transmission, move it to park, turn the engine off and set the parking-brake lever.

  • Grasp the shift knob firmly. Rotate the knob from right-to-left.

  • Continue turning the shift knob. This unscrews it from the gearshift post. Lift the shift knob away from the post when it is free.
