How to Make Tires Stick Out

Commonly used for Jeeps when dealing with large, aftermarket tires or for customized cars where the style of the vehicle requires the tires to stick out past the body, wheel spacers are available for a wide array of vehicle types and designs. They can be used for show cars, trucks, off-road vehicles and performance racing, all depending on your priorities and needs. Wheel spacers can be used for any type of vehicle, and can be installed by anyone with access to normal garage tools and a few hours of spare time.

Things You'll Need

  • Car lift/car jack
  • Jack stands
  • Impact wrench
  • Air compressor
  • Decide on the type of application you are using the wheel spacers for. While installing wheel spacers allows your vehicle's tire spacing to expand, there are practical limitations on how far you can actually space due to safety concerns. A road vehicle, for example, that you drive everyday will not be able to be as spaced as widely as a show car.

  • Park the vehicle on a flat space such as a garage or driveway and ensure the parking brake is on. Chock the wheels with a rock or piece of wood for additional safety. Lift the side of the vehicle you want to work on with a car lift or jack, and place a jack stand under the axle so you have stability while installing the tile spacers.

  • Remove the tires from the vehicle. Use an impact wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts holding the tire in place, and remove it from the vehicle. Open the wheel spacer kit and remove the spacer plus the corresponding nuts that came with it. Place the spacer on the wheel stud and tighten it with the nuts from the kit. Repeat the process for each individual tire you want extended.

  • Check each spacer one final time to ensure that it is properly tightened in place. Replace the tires and tighten them in place. Tighten the lug nuts for the tire in a star pattern, working your way from one bolt to another until you have tightened all of them in place. Lower the vehicle and test your new spacers to see how they have improved the handling or appearance of the car.
