How to Turn Dull Paint Into Shiny Paint

How to turn dull paint into shiny paint. This is more advanced then your normal orbital buffer skill level, using a high speed buffer requires practice and this is a quick guide to get you started.

Things You'll Need

  • High Speed Buffer
  • Wool Pad
  • Medium Cut Foam Pad
  • Synthetic Compound
  • Polish
  • Carnauba Wax
  • First, while your car is in the shade, wash the Exterior of the vehicle well (use car wash soap only no dish degergent). Dry vehicle with a soft clean towel or a chamois. .

  • Place a towel over the windshield and plastic pieces on the vehicle or better yet, tape paper over everything that isn't paint (overs pray from the buffer can be very difficult to get off especially if you don't get it off right away!

  • Now, squeeze the bottle and draw a line across the paint with the compound about 6" across the hood (like putting mustard on a hot dog). Have the Wool Pad already on the buffer, set the buffer between 800-1200 rpm, and before you push the button place the pad at the beggining of the line you drew, and work your way toward the end of it. KEEP YOUR PAD FLAT in flat surfaces and only angle the pad when you are on curved areas. You need to be using a variable speed buffer and start off slow so you don't sling the compound all over the car.

  • Be sure to hold the buffer with your hand just tight enough to hold the buffer in place, (no need to push the buffer down hard on the paint, the buffer does most of the work). After you get the desired results from repeating the compound procedure in one area, repeat all over the whole car. At this point you probably have some swirls which you will need to polish out.

  • Remove the Wool Pad and use the medium cut pad and repeat the process you used during the compounding, but this time with the polish(you can also use swirl remover). Start with a thin line about 6" and work it into the paint, going slow (no need to rush)you can increase the buffer speed to about 1800-2400 *if your comfortable with the higher speed** (remember burning the paint is when you heat the paint by using higher speed and lack of control. You should begin to see some amazing results with the polish Try Meguiar's Deep Crystal Sytem Polish!

  • Wipe all the excess compound and polish with a micro-fiber (wet it, it helps), then apply your favorite wax and remove after it's dry, with a clean micro fiber. You can even finish up with a coat of final inspection or clay lube.
