How to Remove a Red Wine Smell From a Car Carpet

Red wine leaves a lingering odor when spilled on carpet. Even after you remove the stain, some wine odor may remain. You need to neutralize the odor to completely remove it.

Things You'll Need

  • Club soda
  • Paper towels
  • Carpet shampoo
  • Brush
  • Vacuum
  • Baking soda
  • Pour club soda on any visible wine stains on the car carpet. Blot the area with dry paper towels to pull up any excess wine that may remain in the carpet fibers.

  • Apply carpet shampoo to the car carpet. Brush it in with a soft bristle brush to work it down into the fibers.

  • Allow the shampoo to dry, unless the label directions indicate otherwise. Most carpet shampoos do not need rinsing.

  • Vacuum the carpet after it dries. If any wine odor remains, sprinkle the carpet with baking soda and leave this on overnight before vacuuming again.
