How to Remove Yellow Road Paint on the Wheel Wells of a Car

Yellow road paint is used along the center of streets and roadways to show drivers where not to cross. When the paint has faded and is repainted, the yellow paint can stick to your car's tires and be flung into the wheel wells of your car. It's best to remove the yellow road paint as soon as it gets on your car and while it is still wet. You can remove the paint once it is completely dry, but it may be more difficult.

Things You'll Need

  • High-pressure washer
  • Paint thinner
  • Towels
  • Sponge or scuff pad
  • Rinse the wheel wells in a car wash bay with a high-pressure washer. These types of washers are not the best thing to use on your car's paint, but they can be used on the wheel wheels, which are plastic or metal coated in black undercoating. If the paint is still wet, it will come off immediately.

  • Wipe the wheel wells with paint thinner and a towel. This method works if the water did not remove all of the paint or if the yellow paint is dry. Be careful not to get the paint thinner on the car's paint, though it should not harm the paint.

  • Use a rough sponge used for cleaning dishes or use a gray scuff pad from an auto parts store if nothing else works to remove the yellow road paint. The rough pad scratches the paint off of the wheel well. Don't scrub the paint on your car or that area will be dull.
