Salt can easily become attached to your car’s carpet in the winter, leaving behind white stains due to the magnesium and calcium chloride. The salt needs to be removed as quickly as possible because it can damage your carpet over time. Removing the salt without chemical cleaners or professional help will save you money. Once you remove the salt, you will prolong the life of the carpet.
Scrub the carpet with a wire brush to loosen the salt. Move the brush in all directions on the carpet to ensure that you loosen as much salt as possible.
Vacuum the loose salt up with a portable vacuum cleaner. Continue to scrub the carpet while you vacuum to ensure that you remove as much salt as possible.
Soak a washcloth in an equal mixture of vinegar and warm water in a container. Saturate the salt area on the carpet and allow it to dissolve the salt for 15 minutes.
Blot the water up with a dry washcloth. Rinse the area with clean water.
Remove the excess water from the carpet with a wet-dry vacuum.
