How to Clean a Car Dash & Vinyl Door

A car dash and vinyl doors collect dust from the road and oily smudges from fingers. This may build up for a while before you notice how dirty the vinyl is starting to appear. Vinyl is generally easy to clean, but is easier if you don't let too many months go in between cleaning. You should also use either commercial vinyl cleaners, or other mild cleaners to keep your vinyl supple--don't use cleaners that you aren't sure about. The wrong kind of cleaner can ruin vinyl.

Things You'll Need

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Water
  • Liquid dish detergent or vinyl cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Soft brush
  • Sponge
  • Towels
  • Wipe dust off the dashboard with a microfiber cloth. Spray the dashboard with an automotive vinyl and leather cleaner (liquid or foam). If you do not have this on hand, mix a few drops of dish detergent with water in a bucket. Wipe the dashboard with a sponge soaked in this soapy solution.

  • Scrub the dashboard with a clean, damp microfiber cloth. When one side of the cloth is soiled, switch to the clean side. If your dashboard hasn't been cleaned in a while, you may need several cloths to finish this. Use a soft brush to loosen ground-in dirt.

  • Rinse the dashboard by wiping it down with a damp cloth. Dry the dashboard completely with another clean cloth and then begin working on the vinyl door. Open the door, if it is not already open, and spray it with vinyl cleaner or the detergent and water mix.

  • Scrub the door with the brush, starting at the top near the window and working your way down. Follow with a damp sponge to remove more soil from the vinyl.

  • Rinse off the cleaner residue with a damp cloth. Dry the door completely with a towel.
