The Best Way to Clean Car Floor Mats

Car mats are typically the first thing on an automobile to get dirty. Removing dirt, dust, debris and stains is not a difficult process, but it requires regular maintenance. Like most cleaning jobs, the task of cleansing car mats is far simpler when it is kept up with regularly. However, even if this chore has been neglected for awhile, it is still a fairly easy procedure.

Rubber Mats

  • Rubber car mats are simple to clean. After removing them from the vehicle, a warm spray from the hose will do most of the work for you. Clumps of dry dirt or grooved areas may require a scrub brush and soapy water. Rinse them thoroughly and allow to dry in the sun. If desired, a protective agent like Armor All may be applied to keep the mats looking fresh longer.

Carpeted Mats

  • Carpeted car mats require a bit more maintenance. Lay them out flat on the ground and use a broom to aggressively sweep out loose dirt and dust. This is far more effective method than mere shaking them or hanging them up and beating them. After removing the large debris, thoroughly vacuum the mats until they are mostly dust-free.

Rather than using soap or a detergent, liberally apply a carpet cleaner to the mats, focusing on areas that are stained or soiled. Allow them to sit for about five minutes. Using a brush, scrub at the soiled areas in a circular motion. Keep a warm bucket of water on hand, but use it sparingly. Allow the carpet cleaner to do its work.

When done washing, use a light spray from the hose to thoroughly rinse out the cleaner. Hand dry the mats with a clean towel as much as possible, and allow them to finish drying in the sun. A hairdryer may be used, but be careful not to damage the carpeting.
