Canning bread is a technique of baking bread in a canning jar for easy storing and unique presentation. When you can bread you aren't necessarily preserving it like you would normally use a canning jar to do. Instead, you are creating a nifty small-serving bread loaf that can be given as a holiday gift in a basket of other treats. Knowing how to can bread isn't a difficult endeavor and affords you the opportunity to make a variety of bread recipes for cans.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • Mixing bowls
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Canning Jars
  • Baking sheet
  • In a mixing bowl, add 1/2 cup of shortening, 1 tsp. salt, 2 eggs and 1/4 cup buttermilk Beat the ingredients thoroughly until a smooth cream forms.

  • Whisk in 1 tsp. baking powder and 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour. Beat the mixture thoroughly.

  • Spray the inside of a 12 oz. canning jar with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the bread dough into the jar.

  • Place the jar, uncovered, on a baking sheet. Bake it at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until it has risen and formed a golden brown crust.

  • After the jar has fully cooled, secure the lid on the jar. This makes the bread portable, so you can take it on road trips and picnics. It also serves as an interesting basket stuffer for gift baskets that contain other food items.
