Nissan's entry into the subcompact car market started back in the 1980’s. The Sentra was the replacement for the Datsun 210. The 1996 Sentra was capable of fuel mileage of 30 mpg or more. The 1.6-liter and the 2.0-liter engines were designed with timing chains instead of timing belts. This helped keep the maintenance costs low and is probably one reason so many of these cars are still on the road today. Replacing the brake light switch is something you can do at home with a little patience.
Begin by locating the brake light switch on the brake pedal bracket, up under the dash. Remove the lock nut on the brake light switch, and then remove the switch from the bracket.
Unplug the harness connector by pushing the center tab with the small flat-head screwdriver. Install the harness connector on the new switch.
Install the switch into the pedal bracket and put the lock nut on. Adjust the switch until the brake lights go out, and then tighten the lock nut to hold the switch in place. Press the brake pedal a few times to make sure the switch is functioning correctly, and adjust it as necessary.
