How to Change License Plate Bulbs on a 2005 Sienna

The 2005 Toyota Sienna's license plate bulbs provide lighting for the van's rear license plates. Most states require the license plates to be visible when it's dark, so it is recommended to replace them as soon as possible if they go out. The Sienna's rear license plate bulbs are not accessible from the exterior, so you'll have to remove the inside hatch panel to access them. The Sienna's front license plate is not illuminated by any bulbs.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Two 5-watts, type E bulbs
  • Open the Sienna's rear hatch. Remove the hatch strap on the inside panel, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the corners of the hatch inside panel firmly to disconnect the clips holding it in place. With the inside panel removed, you'll have access to the interior components of the door hatch, including the license plate light bulbs.

  • Turn each of the license plate bulb sockets counterclockwise to release them from the mount. Pull the sockets outward to access the bulbs.

  • Slide the bulbs out of their respective sockets and discard them.

  • Insert the replacement bulbs directly into the sockets. Re-insert the sockets into their mounts and turn them clockwise to secure them.

  • Position the inside hatch panel back against the hatch. Push the each corner of the panel firmly against the hatch to snap the plastic clips back in, securing the panel.

  • Attach the panel strap and tighten its screw with the Phillips screwdriver.
