How to Jump Start a 1949 Farmall Cub Tractor

A 1949 Farmall Cub Tractor is designed to run off of a 6-volt battery instead of a 12-volt battery. A 6-volt battery cannot be jump-started directly by a 12-volt battery. The 1949 Farmall Cub tractor can only be jump-started from the tractor's starter and the tractor's frame. Once the jumper cable is attached to the frame, the battery power will bypass the ignition switch and travel directly to the starter. Once the starter is engaged, the tractor's engine will crank.

Things You'll Need

  • Wheel chocks
  • Jumper cables
  • Battery, 12-volt
  • Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the tractor's rear wheels.

  • Turn the tractor's ignition key to the "On" position. Press the clutch inward and shift the transmission into the neutral position. Release the clutch and leave the transmission in neutral.

  • Place the red jumper-cable clamp onto the "Positive" stud of the 12-volt battery. Place the black jumper-cable clamp onto the "Negative" stud of the 12-volt battery.

  • Attach the red clamp on the other side of the jumper-cable to the "Positive" stud on the starter. The positive stud on the starter is the stud to which the 6-volt battery cable connects.

  • Slowly attach the black clamp on the other side of the jumper cable to the tractor's frame. Once the black jumper-cable makes contact with the frame, it will cause the starter to engage. Remove the jumper-cables from the tractor and the 12-volt battery after the starter cranks the engine.
