How to Paint by Color Code

A car's paint can become damaged or faded over time. The paint color originally used to paint the car is described by a number called a color code and is displayed by the manufacturer on the car. A car's manufacturer may supply information about the location of the color code on the vehicle in the car's owners manual. Once you are able to identify the correct color code, you can order paint to touch up or repaint your car.

  • Locate the color code display on your car. The location of the color code varies by the make, model and year of the car. You can use online resources to identify the location of the color code on your car.

  • Contact the car dealership where you purchased the car or a dealership that sells cars manufactured by the same car company. Tell them that you want to touch up or repaint your car using the same paint that was originally applied to the car. Supply the color code information and discuss purchase options. If you only need a small amount of paint to touch up your car, you may be able to purchase a small amount. Paint amounts vary by manufacturer.

  • Apply the paint to a place on your car that was always kept hidden from the sun and has never faded. Let the paint dry completely. This will allow you to properly compare between the original color of your car and the color you are testing. View the paint you acquired and the paint that was originally applied to the car. If they match, then you can touch up or repaint the car using that color code.
