The year 1992 marked the launch of the eighth generation of Buick's LeSabre full size sedan. The 3800 series V-6 engine powered the LeSabre in 1992, with the help of a fuel injection system. The LeSabre's fuel injection system relied on a fuel filter to protect the fuel rail and injectors from contamination due to sediment and other foreign debris that inevitably makes its way into the gas tank of every vehicle. Buick recommends fuel filter replacement every 15,000 miles to keep the engine running at peak performance.
Block off the LeSabre's left-front tire with two wheel chocks. Lift the right side with the floor jack. Place two jack stands, one at the front and one at the rear, under the right frame rail and lower the LeSabre onto the jack stands.
Remove the LeSabre's gas cap and then open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a battery wrench. Remove the fuel pressure connection cap (located next to the throttle body, on top of the engine), wrap the connection with a rag and depress the connection core with the tip of a pocket screwdriver to relive the fuel pressure.
Slide under the right side of the LeSabre, directly below the passenger doors, with the drain pan, wrenches and a new fuel filter. Place the drain pan directly under the fuel filter, mounted on the inboard side of the right frame rail.
Remove the fuel lines from the fuel filter with the 13-mm box wrenches -- use one wrench to hold the filter nut in place while turning the fuel line nut with the other wrench. Loosen the fuel filter retaining band bolt with a 13-mm box wrench. Slide the old filter out of the band and set it in the drain pan.
Slide the new filter into the retaining band. Tighten the retaining band bolt with the box wrench. Tighten the fuel lines onto the new filter with the box wrenches.
Climb out with the drain pan, old filter and tools. Reinstall the gas cap.
Lift the LeSabre off the jack stands, using the floor jack. Remove the jack stands. Lower the LeSabre to the ground with the floor jack.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the wheel chocks.
Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position and wait 10 seconds before starting the LeSabre. If it doesn't start quickly, shut the ignition off and then turn it back to the "Run" position for 10 more seconds before starting.
