How to Remove a 98 Cadillac Power Steering Pump

The power steering pump in a 1998 Cadillac help gives this car the ease of steering Cadillac has been known for over the years. The pump requires replacement when it breaks down or starts losing fluid. Find the pump at the front of the engine and is controlled by the Serpentine belt. The belt rides along the pulley transmitting power from the crankshaft pulley. The power steering pump sends the fluid to the steering gear making the steering wheel very easy to turn.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Quart of Power Steering Fluid

Removing the Power Steering Pump

  • Ensure the car is parked on a flat and level surface. Set the parking brake.

  • Open the hood for access to the engine compartment. Locate the battery at the front driver side corner of the engine bay. Disconnect the negative "black" cable with a socket wrench.

  • Loosen the tensioner pulley with a socket wrench to take the serpentine belt off. Pull the belt off the power steering pump pulley.

  • Disconnect the power steering hoses from the pump with a line wrench. Ensure the drain pan is under the power steering pump to catch the power steering fluid.

  • Loosen the bolts around the power steering pump with a socket wrench. There will be three bolts to remove. One on the top, one on the left and one on bottom.

  • Pull the pump out from the engine compartment.

Installing the Power Steering Pump

  • Line the new pulley up to the bracket where the old pulley bolted. Insert the three bolts and start screwing them by hand. Tighten all three bolts with the socket wrench after they started by hand.

  • Attach the two hoses to the power steering pump. Tighten the hoses with a line wrench.

  • Press the tensioner pulley down to place the serpentine belt over the pulley. Once the belt is on the pulley, slowly release the tensioner to tighten the belt.

  • Locate the power steering fluid cap at the top of the pump. Pour power steering fluid in to the reservoir at half-quart intervals. Place the power steering cap back over the opening to inspect the fluid level. The cap has a dipstick attached to the cap. Keep pouring fluid until the dipstick has fluid on the "Full" mark.

  • Close the hood when done.
